In addition to its in-house Clinical <strong>Research<\/strong> Units, the <strong>Clinical<\/strong> Research <strong>Programme<\/strong> has greatly expanded in the last three years through agreements with both private and public hospitals in the <strong>Madrid<\/strong> area. This <strong>expansion<\/strong> allows the <strong>CNIO<\/strong> to allocate resources to both basic and applied research in an integrated manner. The <strong>CNIO<\/strong> conducts excellent research and brings the very latest technology in the field of cancer. It is recognized today as one of the leading <strong>cancer<\/strong> research <strong>institutes<\/strong> in the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h1>Core units<\/h1>\n<div>\n<p>The Core <strong>Units<\/strong> (Proteomics, Genomics, Confocal <strong>Microscopy<\/strong>, Molecular Imaging, Mouse <strong>Genome<\/strong> Editing, Monoclonal Antibodies, Histopathology, and Flow Cytometry) provide the most advanced scientific and technological support services. These units meet the high-tech <strong>requirements<\/strong> of high-end <strong>biomedical<\/strong> research, ranging from genome sequencing and proteome analysis to the latest <strong>breakthroughs<\/strong> in molecular imaging and <strong>microscopy<\/strong>, among other areas. Highly qualified personnel are also available to advise and assist <strong>CNIO<\/strong> researchers. Therefore, through close collaboration with these experts, the full range of expertise needed for developing our <strong>projects<\/strong> will be assured with <strong>minimal<\/strong> delay.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h1>Animal facility<\/h1>\n<div>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\">The Specific <strong>Pathogen<\/strong> Free (<strong>SPF<\/strong>) Animal Facility covers 3,000 m\u00b2. All <strong>mouse<\/strong> strains housed in the facility are either <strong>generated<\/strong> within the barrier or introduced by <strong>rederivation<\/strong>, as no live mice are introduced <strong>into<\/strong> the barrier regardless of their health status. There is also an area to house a small colony of <strong>Xenopus<\/strong> laevis. All records concerning breeding protocols and animal inventory are <strong>computerized<\/strong> and stored in a web-based application accessible via intranet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\">To <strong>maintain<\/strong> clean air in the premises, mice are <strong>housed<\/strong> in ventilated racks with <strong>the<\/strong> integration of Individually Ventilated Caging (<strong>IVC<\/strong>) systems into the building&#8217;s ventilation <strong>systems<\/strong>. Mice are manipulated in a <strong>Type II<\/strong> <strong>Biosecurity<\/strong> Cabinet. The primary <strong>responsibility<\/strong> of the <strong>SPF<\/strong> Animal Facility is to strictly comply with National, European Union, and International Recommendations regarding the use and care of animals in research, which is of paramount importance to the CNIO.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><strong>Microbiological<\/strong> and <strong>environmental<\/strong> parameters in animal areas are constantly monitored. Bedding, water, and cages are sterilized by <strong>autoclaving<\/strong>, and the diet is irradiated. An air shower and sterile clothes are required for anyone entering the <strong>barrier<\/strong> area. <strong>Daily<\/strong> operations and <strong>husbandry<\/strong> procedures are highly automated; robotic devices perform potentially hazardous tasks such as processing dirty bedding, and washing\/<strong>filling<\/strong> cages and bottles.
